What is detoxification, and how do we make it effective?
Detoxification, in simple terms, is your body's way of eliminating harmful substances or toxins. These harmful substances/toxins can come from the food you eat, the things you drink, the air you breathe, the products you put on your body or the medication you take.
The detoxification system in the body involves the liver, kidneys, intestine, lungs, skin and lymphatic system.
Many people focus on supporting just one of these systems during a detox without ensuring that the downstream pathways are functioning effectively. For example, if phase I liver detoxification is stimulated without adequate phase II conjugation or proper elimination via the bowels and bile, metabolites and toxins can recirculate, often worsening symptoms such as headaches, hormonal imbalance, skin eruptions, or fatigue.
Did you know coffee can contribute to this imbalance? Coffee stimulates phase I, but not phase II. In some individuals, this may lead to an overactivation of phase I, placing greater demand on phase II and increasing the likelihood of toxin recirculation.
Effective detoxification, therefore, needs to be planned, sequenced, and supported by well-functioning detoxification and elimination pathways.
